KOLKATA Street Photography Workshop (25-26 March 2023)

Hosted by Sreeranj Sreedhar - Suresh Naganathan

INTRODUCTION

We often think of street photography as a genre that focuses on capturing activities that happen in the outside world. While that may be true, it is only a partial truth. Street photography, at its core, encompasses much more than that: It is about finding the undercurrent of magic that overlays real life. It's about finding little (or big) surprises (a moment of joy, a shaft of light, an interesting connection) that occur every day. It also tells us about you: Street photography, when done with passion and authenticity, gives us a glimpse into the photographer's world; what makes them tick, their character, their interests.
It is the easiest and the hardest genre of photography. It is the easiest because all you have to do, is wear your shoes, take your camera and get out of your house. The world around you is your canvas. It is also the hardest because you do not control a single element in the environment, neither the light nor the people that walk into your frame. In a fraction of a second, you need to press the shutter at the moment when all the elements in your frame are in the right place, while still telling us something about you and the outside world.
Sometimes, this can feel daunting, especially in our cities brimming with sensory triggers. This can lead to questions and doubts: What do you shoot? How do I approach this scene? Is there anything to see here?
Over the course of 2 days (and half a day of theory), Sreeranj and I will endeavor to help you find your answers to these questions. Through a mix of mentored walks, free-flowing discussions, Q&A sessions, and an honest review session, we will guide you to be more observant. to understand better what catches your eye, to approach both complex and quieter scenes, and more than anything we will guide you to keep asking yourself "What else?" What else can I see here? What else can I add (or subtract) to make my picture stronger?
Whether you are taking your first steps on the streets or are a more experienced photographer who would like to get an honest assessment of your current state, this workshop will have something to offer you.

Testimonials from past workshops

  • This workshop has been a life-changer, which was exactly what I needed. I look forward to my ever-evolving street photography style “growing up” from my lessons with you both. Thanks much for the time, energy and efforts you’ve contributed to me (while still maintaining excellent balance amongst all the other students). Varnasi is a unique, special place—I’m honored to have spent my first time there with you while having this rich learning experience! - Kat Kozell

  • It was a tremendous and really amazing experience, I knew that it's going to shape my perspective and help me increase my knowledge, but I wasn't expecting that this is going to be so fun, interactive and meaningful in my photography tenure. I can say that this workshop helped me advance in my photography and in my personal life. I got so much to learn from you both, about Street photography, basic nature and concept of photography, and most importantly about life, because of that I got to understand how much big difference it makes on our perspective, how we perceive things, how we make our frame and how we see things in general. And I believe one of the best part about the workshop was continues and real time reviewing of our pictures, getting corrected then and there at the scene made my pictures great and helped me learn a lot about my framing and how to improve my eye. - Rishab Sharma

  • Thank you so much for this amazing opportunity, it was my first street photography and I was very much excited for this workshop. In fact , it was a real challenge for me in the Streets, with you guys I was very happy to learn so many things, I am still looking for more opportunities in this field. Thank you once again. -  Jitesh Sundar

  • I really enjoyed the first brief session we had over the gmeet, it was detailed and motivational and gave me many ideas to take with me to the physical workshop. The 2 days at the workshop went really fast, I loved shooting along with you both and get instant feedback. It was fun to observe you to create masterpiece in person. The fact that you also shot and sat with us even in non-workshop hours was very kind. The review session was probably the best part about the workshop. It was so insightful, to learn from your very constructive feedbacks. At last, I really appreciate all the resources you provide and the motivation you keep us giving even after the workshop. It's a gem of the collection you have. - Pranay Agrawal

  • It was a ton of learning with two really cool mentors and a lot of fun - MVS

  • The street photography workshop in Bangalore was an eye opener at least for me. I felt standing someone next you mentoring your skills and correcting your faults is the actual meaning of workshops. This is one thing we can't get from reading books or from social media....
You both are good mentors and good speakers also..as street photography is not only making pictures but also discussing the content and thought behind the making a picture.. I feel one must attend these workshops for knowing about street photography, get inspired and enjoy clicking pictures... - Prashant

  • I was lucky to be a part of the most amazing workshop on Street Photography in Bangalore last weekend. I got to learn a lot of tips & tricks about the art of Street Photography; and during the course of these two days, I was able to overcome my fear of getting closer to the subject to compose my pictures. The portfolio review was conducted very well and helped me to learn a lot about composition. The immense literature that you have curated in terms of videos, books & SM handles is very useful. I am sure that I will carry tips you shared throughout my photography journey.
Thank you Suresh & Sreeranj, you guys rock! - Kishan
